Double cleansing, from where it started

Double cleansing is the one Japanese skincare idea that made it out into the world intact, and it is also the one that gets described in the most needlessly elaborate terms. It is not a ritual. It is a solvent problem, and it takes about ninety seconds.

Why it exists

Oil dissolves oil. Water does not.

Sunscreen — the water-resistant kind people here wear every day — is built specifically to survive water and sweat. So is most long-wear makeup. If you attack that with a foaming water-based wash, one of two things happens: it does not fully come off, or it comes off only because you have used something harsh enough to strip your skin along with it.

So you use two things. An oil-based cleanser first, on dry skin, to dissolve the oil-soluble layer. Then a normal water-based wash to take away the oil and everything now suspended in it. Two steps because there are two different kinds of dirt.

That is the whole theory. It became standard practice in Japan for the same reason the sunscreen wall exists: when a country wears water-resistant sunscreen 365 days a year, it needs a reliable way to get it off every night.

The method

Step one, on dry skin and dry hands. This matters more than anything else in this post. Oil cleanser applied to a wet face turns into a milky emulsion immediately and stops dissolving anything. Both your face and your hands need to be dry.

Two or three pumps. Massage for thirty to sixty seconds — properly, over the whole face, and pay attention to the sides of the nose and the hairline where sunscreen accumulates. You will feel the makeup let go.

Then add water, to your face, while the oil is still on it. Wet your fingertips and keep massaging. The oil turns milky and white. This is the emulsifying step and it is the one people skip; it is what stops the oil smearing rather than rinsing. Ten seconds of this, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Step two. A normal foaming or gel wash, on now-wet skin, for twenty seconds. Rinse. Done.

Your face should feel clean and not tight. If it feels tight and squeaky, the second cleanser is too strong — that squeak is not cleanliness, it is your skin telling you it has lost more than it wanted to.

DHC’s is the famous one, and deservedly. It is olive-oil based, it emulsifies cleanly, it does not sting my eyes, and one bottle goes a very long way. It is also the one you can find in North America most easily, which is not nothing.

It is not the cheapest, and outside Japan the price gap widens.

Softymo is the one I keep going back to. It is a fraction of the price, the bottle is enormous, and honestly the performance difference is small enough that I would rather have three bottles of Softymo than one of DHC. I used both back to back for a couple of months each, which is the only way to tell.

If you are trying double cleansing for the first time and are not sure you will keep it up, buy this one. It removes the financial argument against the habit.

The mistakes worth avoiding

Using an oil cleanser as your only cleanser. It will leave a film. The second wash is not optional; it is the half that removes the first half.

Doing it in the morning. You do not need it. Overnight your face has accumulated some sebum and nothing else. A splash of water, or at most a gentle wash, is enough. Double cleansing morning and night is how people end up with irritated skin and conclude the method is the problem.

Buying a cleansing balm because it looks nicer. Balms are lovely and they work. They also cost three to five times as much for the same job, and the jar means fingers in the product. I used a balm for most of a year before switching back, and the only thing I missed was how it looked on the shelf.

Skipping the emulsify step. Adding water before you rinse is the difference between oil that lifts away and oil that smears around. It takes ten seconds.

Where this leaves you

You now have the three things that confuse people most: what sunscreen to buy, what a lotion actually is, and how to take it all off again. That is a complete routine, and it costs less than one mid-range Western moisturiser.
